Chinese Copper Red glazes date back to the 17^th Century they are distinctive and have been highly prized in history.  It is recognized that copper reds are very difficult to achieve and repeat consistently.  Crystals and how they are distributed in the glaze, fired in excess of 1300^oc under reduction conditions, determine the red color.  The Copper Red glaze is enhanced by a Cobalt blue and yellow Iron glaze.  When all 3 are combined a delicate blend of subtle shades are achieved.  The process of multiple glazing produces exceptional pieces with the deepest and richest blends of color unique to Mountain Ash Pottery.  The Legend says The Emperor of China demanded a red from his Master Potter after a lifetime of pursuing the red to no avail in desperation he threw himself into the kiln; to the Emperors delight a red appeared.  A small town outside the outskirts of Shangri in China still celebrates the lighting of the kilns of the Master Potter twice a year with a major day of celebration.
