Woodwork

Lindsay Dunn is a prize winning self taught wood turner who lives in Hillgrove, New South Wales.  He enjoys working with the rich and diverse range of Australian timbers, from the tablelands, including Red Cedar, Rosewood, and Gum.  As can be seen from his work the timbers characteristics and beauty can be highlighted in simple forms or be a canvas for something more.

Prior to turning professional in 1985 Lindsay worked in many different occupations, which have made him multi-skilled.   These skills have proved to be a valuable asset, as Lindsay designs and manufactures, the machines and tooling he uses; they have also helped him with product development, sales, teaching and giving woodturning demonstrations.

As Lindsay says ‘the lathe has many forms, the simplest and oldest being the potters wheel through to the modern computer controlled engineers lathe, its importance is largely taken for granted today, but it is worth remembering that there would have been no industrial revolution without it.

Lindsay left a well paid job behind in 1985 to concentrate on making a living from his craft.  During his first six years he produced work for local cabinet makers, builders, antique restores and craft outlets.   In 1996 with the help of his wife Lexie, he moved away from trade work to focus on gallery pieces and they have been supplying galleries throughout Australia ever since.

Lindsay won the best turned bowl for his lattice work in the 2004 National Woodturning Awards, and has been commissioned to turn pieces for State Dignitaries, the Chinese Delegation and the American Ambassador.  His work can be found at the Armidale City Council, Embassy in Spain, Kayota Japan and in New York.  He has had exhibitions of his work around Australia and the USA where he has also sold many pieces.  Lindsay is happy to share his skills and has conducted workshops around Australia.

Suggested care of his pieces, rub in a little liquid paraffin oil then shine with a soft cloth this will retain the shine and finish of the timber.
